Every year on June 14th, countries around the globe come together to celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD).

The occasion aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank the selfless individuals who make life-saving blood donations.

    The Context in Asia

In Asia, like many parts of the world, access to safe blood is a crucial component of an effective health system. The importance of blood donations becomes even more pronounced given the vast population and the numerous health challenges that confront the region.

According to the World Health Organization, less than 50% of blood supplies in low-income countries come from voluntary unpaid donors. Family and paid donors making up the rest. In contrast, in middle- and high-income countries, over 90% of blood supplies come from voluntary unpaid donors. Many Asian countries still fall on the lower end of this spectrum, highlighting the importance of encouraging more voluntary donors.

    World Blood Donor Day 2023

This year, WBDD’s global theme for 2023 is “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.” The theme emphasizes the need for regular donations of blood and plasma to create a sustainable supply of blood and blood products. These are life-saving necessities that should always be available to all patients who require timely treatment.

One of the primary objectives of this year’s campaign is to encourage healthy individuals to donate blood as often as is safe and possible. This is crucial in transforming the quality of life for transfusion-dependent patients. Additionally, it helps build a secure blood supply across the world.

The Importance of Regular Donations in Asia

In Asia, the significance of this call cannot be understated. Given the region’s diverse health challenges, a reliable supply of safe blood is a crucial resource. Countries like India and China, with their vast populations, are particularly in need of stable blood supplies. In 2019, it was reported that India faced a shortage of 1.9 million units of blood. That is equivalent to 15% of the country’s requirement.

WBDD serves as a valuable platform to raise awareness about this need and to call for support at all levels. These start from national governments to regional and global development partners. The goal is to invest in, strengthen, and sustain national blood donation programmes. Thus, ensuring universal access to safe blood products.

The Role of Technology in Enhancing Blood Donation in Asia

With the rise of digital technologies, there’s also the potential to leverage these innovations to improve blood donation processes and systems in Asia. Certain countries have developed mobile apps and online platforms to connect potential donors with those in need. For example, in India, initiatives like the “Blood Donors” mobile application allows users to find people in their local area who need blood urgently. Such technologies not only make it easier for individuals to donate but also ensure that donations reach those in need more efficiently. Hence, as Asia continues its digital transformation journey, such technological advancements will undoubtedly play a significant role in enhancing the region’s blood donation landscape.

    Conclusion

Finally, World Blood Donor Day 2023 is hosted by Algeria. It presents an excellent opportunity for Asia to showcase its commitment to this vital cause. From social media campaigns to donor appreciation ceremonies, every effort counts in promoting the crucial message of this year’s campaign: “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.” By supporting this cause, we can make a significant difference to millions across Asia and the world.
