DA Addresses Bird Flu Concerns in Tarlac: No Confirmed Outbreak

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has moved to clarify the status of a potential avian influenza (AI) outbreak in Tarlac province.

Recent media reports suggested the presence of bird flu, leading to public concern. However, the DA and the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) have confirmed that no notification of an outbreak has been received from the local government.

    Reports and Clarifications

This clarification follows a report by the Philippine Egg Board Association (PEBA) regarding a positive test for bird flu at a commercial farm in Tarlac. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. stated that BAI had not been informed of any cases of bird flu. “There’s no confirmatory report, and mostly it’s just technically gossip that’s happening,” Tiu-Laurel remarked, dismissing the circulating rumours. He emphasised the importance of relying on verified information rather than unconfirmed media reports. “The BAI Animal Diagnosis and Reference Laboratory (ADDRL) is the sole authority to detect and confirm positive cases of bird flu through standardised testing protocols.”

    Testing and Proactive Measures

The BAI had proactively collected blood samples from several farms in the province. Although the specific locations of these farms were not disclosed, BAI assured the public of the accuracy of the BAI’s testing facilities. “Our modern AI laboratory at BAI is well-equipped to provide reliable assessments. Once the results are out, whether positive or negative, they will be communicated clearly,” he said. The public is anxiously awaiting the test results, which are expected to be released within the week. BAI underscored that if the samples tested positive, immediate and stringent control measures would be implemented to contain any potential outbreak. “If we see it’s positive, we’ll announce it’s positive. But the statement that there’s an outbreak, we cannot validate that yet,” he reiterated. He urged patience and caution until official results are available.

Preventing Public Panic and Ensuring Accurate Information

The DA’s prompt response aims to prevent public panic and ensure that the situation is managed based on facts rather than speculation. Controlling AI involves integrated strategies to prevent and manage the spread of the virus among poultry populations. The cornerstone of AI control is implementing stringent biosecurity measures on poultry farms.

These measures include restricting access to farm facilities, thereby limiting exposure to potential virus carriers. Only essential personnel are allowed. Additionally, they must adhere to strict sanitation protocols, such as disinfecting equipment, vehicles, and clothing before and after entering. Additionally, controlling wildlife, particularly wild birds known to be natural reservoirs of AI, is crucial. This can involve setting up physical barriers. Another measure is implementing deterrents to prevent wild birds from coming into contact with domestic poultry. Ensuring the security of feed and water supplies is also vital. They can be potential sources of contamination if not properly protected.

Commitment to Transparency and Public Safety

The clarification from the DA comes in response to earlier reports. Comments on social media had raised alarms about a possible bird flu outbreak in Tarlac. The situation underscores the importance of accurate reporting and official confirmation before drawing conclusions. The DA’s commitment to transparency and the dissemination of verified information is crucial in managing public health and agricultural concerns.

    Future Actions and Public Assurance

As the situation develops, the DA promises to keep the public informed and to take all necessary measures to control any spread of avian influenza. The department continues to work closely with local governments and industry stakeholders to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the public. This incident highlights the critical need for vigilance and preparedness in managing animal health crises. The DA’s measures and commitment to accurate information will help mitigate the impact of any outbreak and maintain confidence in the safety of the food supply. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels. They are also advised to avoid spreading unverified information that could lead to unnecessary panic.
