The National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS) has announced the development of a unique antiseptic mouth rinse with enhanced antiviral properties following a successful study on the efficacy of mouth rinses in reducing SARS-CoV-2 virus levels.

This innovation is a result of a collaboration between NDCS and Singapore’s own oral care brand, Pearlie White. The antiseptic mouth rinse is now available for sale.

The study’s findings have been peer-reviewed and published in a renowned international medical journal. It underscores the potential for this mouth rinse to improve oral health. Additionally, it can nffer a preventive measure against viral infections in the mouth. This highlights a significant stride in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Breakthrough in Oral Health Research

The research, led by Associate Professor Jaya Seneviratne of the National Dental Research Institute Singapore (NDRIS), initially focused on the effectiveness of Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) in commercial mouth rinses. Findings revealed these rinses could significantly suppress salivary SARS-CoV-2 levels within five minutes of usage, with effects lasting up to six hours. Inspired by his volunteer work during the pandemic’s peak, Prof Seneviratne’s team partnered with Pearlie White to create the Pearlie White Defenze Antiseptic Fluoride Mouth Rinse, a product combining expertise in oral health and industry experience.

    The Pearlie White Defenze Advantage

This novel mouth rinse formulation goes beyond antiviral properties. It fights plaque, prevents tooth decay, and is gentle enough for daily use as part of regular oral care routines. The alcohol-free rinse includes a blend of Cetylpyridinium Chloride, Fluoride, Xylitol and Zinc Gluconate. It also includes natural ingredients like Echinacea, Chamomile, and Tea Tree Oil. Dermatologically tested for safety, this product stands out in the oral health market.

    Potential Impact on Healthcare

Professor Marco A Peres, Deputy CEO of Research and Education at NDCS, emphasised the rinse’s potential in managing the spread of aerosol-transmitted viruses, especially in clinical settings. This innovation is poised to protect healthcare workers and patients from infection risks during aerosol-generating procedures like dental treatments.

    A Proud Achievement for Singapore

Andy Ong, Managing Director of Pearlie White, expressed pride in the Halal-Certified, Made In Singapore product. This public-private partnership is set to enhance consumer oral health globally, marking a significant achievement for the country.

    Availability and Access

The Pearlie White Defenze Antiseptic Fluoride Mouth Rinse will be accessible to the public through various channels, including the Pearlie White eStore, Lazada, Qoo10, Shopee, SingHealth pharmacies and institutions, as well as selected dental/medical clinics, pharmacies, supermarkets, and healthcare product retailers.

This development represents a significant step in oral healthcare innovation, potentially transforming public health outcomes and reinforcing Singapore’s position as a leader in medical research and product development.
