It marks the first time the Wolrd Congress of Dermatology (WCD2023) is held in Southeast Asia, since its inception in 1889. The tropical location comes with a special focus on topics pertinent to the region, including skin diseases in ethnic skin, neglected tropical skin diseases, and the impact of climate change on skin health. This year, the theme was also ‘Dermatology Beyond Borders’, the congress aims to broaden dermatology’s reach, boost patient and public involvement, bridge physical and social divides, and foster an inclusive event that recognizes different backgrounds.

Professor Roy Chan, President of the Congress Organizing Committee adds “By providing a forum for specialists from all corners of the world, we hope that the WCD2023 will be able to catalyse ideas, increase collaboration and re-establish networks that will expand the boundaries of dermatology knowledge and skin science”.

    WCD2023 programme highlights

The scientific program included over 200 symposiums, keynote talks, expert forums and debates on the latest advances across the broad field of dermatology. Experts discussed research and treatments for conditions spanning from psoriasis and eczema to skin cancers, infections, pigmentation disorders, and more.

Sessions will also address key issues like skin health for migrant and refugee populations as well as underserved nations in the global south. “As we emerge from the health and economic turmoil of the past few years, WCD2023 will be all the more important in reuniting experts to chart a path forward,” said Professor Chan.

Environmental sustainability is a focus this year through a green policy guiding event planning. The organizers will also contribute to restoring nature in Singapore by planting one million additional trees over the next decade in partnership with the country’s OneMillionTrees movement.

Singapore Tourism Board Executive Director Edward Koh noted that hosting the event showcases Singapore as an ideal location for health sciences, innovation, and business congresses. “Singapore’s focus on innovation, health sciences and medtech makes us an ideal host for WCD2023…We look forward to working with partners such as the International League of Dermatological Societies who prioritise sustainable congresses and are leaders in the field of medical advancements globally” said Koh.

By hosting the congress, Singapore aims to create opportunities for economic growth, knowledge exchange, and demonstrate its capabilities for major medical conferences. that push frontiers in medicine and medical research.
