DOH-Bicol Achieves Remarkable 92% TB Treatment Success Rate

The Department of Health-Center for Health Development in Bicol (DOH CHD-5) announced a 92% treatment success rate for tuberculosis (TB) cases for Q1 2024.

This achievement was highlighted during the “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” briefing held at the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City. This success is indicative of the region’s robust health initiatives and effective implementation of TB treatment protocols.

    Comprehensive Health Agenda

Combating TB is part of a broader, 8-point health agenda to realise Universal Health Care (UHC) in Bicol. Dr. Rodolfo Antonio Albornoz, DOH-Bicol office in charge regional director, elaborated on this comprehensive strategy. The agenda encompasses the following: TB, HIV, immunisation, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), road safety, hypertension and diabetes, cancer, nutrition, and maternal health. This integrated approach ensures that the health department addresses multiple health issues simultaneously, providing a holistic improvement in public health. The approach was previously delivered by DOH Undersecretary Nestor Santiago Jr. during the Regional Technical Assistance Agenda Planning Workshop in Legazpi.

New Mobile Screening Van Enhances Accessibility

A significant development in the region’s fight against TB is the acquisition of a state-of-the-art mobile screening van. This van has  an X-ray machine and an ECG machine. It will travel across Bicol’s provinces to screen and diagnose TB and other respiratory diseases. This initiative aims to reach remote and underserved areas. The mobile van represents a proactive step in early diagnosis and timely treatment, crucial factors in controlling TB spread.

    Expanding HIV Services

In addition to TB, DOH-Bicol is also making strides in HIV treatment and prevention. Currently, 64% of persons living with HIV in the region are receiving antiretroviral therapy. Dr. Albornoz announced the establishment of three new treatment hubs in Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and Sorsogon this year. These hubs will provide comprehensive care and support to HIV patients, ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention and counselling. They expect this expansion to enhance the accessibility and quality of HIV services, contributing to better health outcomes for patients.

    Continuous Support and Education

DOH-Bicol’s strategy involves not just treatment but also extensive support and education. The health department continues to provide testing kits and conduct educational symposiums to raise awareness about TB and HIV. These initiatives educate the public on prevention, early detection, and the importance of adhering to treatment protocols. By fostering a well-informed community, DOH-Bicol aims to reduce the stigma associated with these diseases and encourage more individuals to seek treatment.

    Collaboration and Community Involvement

The success of these health initiatives is largely attributed to the collaborative efforts between the DOH, local government units, and community organisations. The combined efforts of these stakeholders have created a robust health infrastructure capable of responding effectively to the region’s health needs. Community involvement plays a crucial role in the implementation of health programs, as local knowledge and participation enhance the reach and impact of these initiatives.

    Future Goals and Challenges

While the 92% TB treatment success rate is a commendable achievement, DOH-Bicol continues to strive for even higher success rates. The health department is focused on addressing the remaining challenges, such as ensuring treatment adherence and managing drug-resistant TB cases. Additionally, the ongoing efforts to expand HIV services and improve maternal health are part of DOH-Bicol’s long-term strategy to achieve UHC.

Dr. Albornoz emphasised the importance of sustained efforts and continued support from all sectors to maintain and build upon these successes. The health department is committed to enhancing its programs and services, leveraging technology and innovation to improve health outcomes for all Bicolanos.
