Do Lip Fillers Hurt? How Long Would They Stay?

One of the most popular kinds of cosmetic procedures, lip fillers increase the volume of your lips.

If you are thinking about increasing your self-confidence, correcting the shape of your lips, or restoring your lips back to their previous size, keep reading to find out more about lip fillers.

    What are lip fillers?

A lip filler is a type of injectable dermal filler and is one of the most common methods of lip augmentation. Most modern fillers use products that contain substances similar to hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that can be naturally found in the body. There are various different brands of filler available, but you should consult your healthcare provider to find the one that will best suit your needs.

What happens when you get them?

Before you schedule an appointment, ensure that your procedure will be performed by an experienced and registered healthcare provider, such as a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or cosmetic surgeon. Prior to any injections, they will schedule a consultation with you to discuss the procedure in detail. They will help to assess various factors, such as your reasons for getting lip fillers, any existing health conditions, how much filler to use, and where to inject it, among other things. Try to thoroughly describe your expectations to your healthcare provider when deciding how you want your lips to look, so they can advise and adjust your procedure to best achieve your goals.

During the procedure itself, your lips will be sanitized and an anaesthetic will be given to numb your lips. This is done to numb the area to prevent any pain and to make the process as comfortable as possible. Very fine needles will be used to inject the filler into your lips and you may feel a slight pinch as this is done.

Following the injection, ice may be given to alleviate any discomfort or swelling, and you will be sent home. As a general rule, it is best to avoid using lipstick or any other lip products immediately after your procedure. You may experience some swelling and bruising as your lips heal from the injection, but a majority of it should go away within 2 weeks. Your healthcare provider should also schedule a follow-up appointment about 2 weeks after your procedure to monitor your progress.

    How long does it last?

As lip fillers are not permanent, they may only last for about 6 to 12 months depending on the brand of filler used. After that, it may take another 6 to 18 months to wear away depending on an individual’s metabolism. You may need to schedule routine touch-ups to maintain your desired lip volume.

Should you dislike your results, it is possible to have your lip fillers removed. This can be done by scheduling a visit to your healthcare provider to reverse the procedure, which is done by injecting the enzyme hyaluronidase to dissolve the lip fillers.

    Should you get lip fillers?

If you feel that lip fillers will help to improve your self-esteem, it’s definitely worth looking into the procedure. As long as you get them done by an experienced healthcare provider, you will be in good hands.
