Philippines Contemplate “Mukbang” Ban After Vlogger’s Tragic Death

Following the tragic death of vlogger Dongz Apatan during a Mukbang video broadcast, the Philippines’ Department of Health is contemplating measures that may include a ban on such content.

Mukbang, a portmanteau of the Korean words for “eating” and “broadcast,” has gained significant popularity across various social media platforms. The trend, originating from South Korea, involves content creators eating copious amounts of food while interacting with their audience. While it initially started as a form of entertainment, the practice has since evolved into a competitive sport for some. Some participants often attempt to outdo one another in terms of quantity and speed of consumption.

A Tragic Incident: The Catalyst for Change

The tragic incident prompted the DOH’s concern involving a vlogger known for his making content. Vlogger Dongz Apatan, with over 400,000 followers on Facebook, reportedly suffered a stroke due to excessive food consumption after a “mukbang” session. The day before his death, he posted videos of himself consuming a large pile of fried chicken. The news of his death has sent shockwaves through the online community. It also raised questions about the potential health hazards linked to extreme eating practices.

Health Risks of Mukbang: Expert Concerns

DOH secretary Ted Herbosa stated that there are a lot of factors to consider before considering control of “mukbang” videos in the country. He has stated that they have conducted preliminary research, allowing them to pinpoint the reason why “mukbangs” are popular. Studies have shown that watching similar videos could lead to eating disorders or internet addiction. He has also said that engaging in the creation of “mukbang” content could lead to hypertension, heart conditions, non-communicable diseases, and even heart attacks. “It’s bad practice because people make content by overeating. Overeating is not healthy. It will lead to obesity,” he said.

    Regulatory Measures: Potential Mukbang Ban

In light of these concerns, the DOH is considering the implementation of stricter regulations or an outright ban on mukbang content. Public health expert, Dr Tony Leachon, weighed in on the issue. “These mukbang videos, derived from Korean culture, are getting out of hand,” Dr. Leachon said. He suggests a collaborative approach between the DOH and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to filter such content. The education sector is also encouraged to play a role in raising awareness among the youth on the dangers of “mukbang”. The DOH has since rethought their stance on issuing a ban on the showing of “mukbang” content online. They have stated that they will be looking into the issue of whether this content promotes unhealthy eating habits. An outright ban or content control will only be enacted if there is a connection between the “mukbang” content and the vlogger’s untimely death.

    Broader Health Initiatives: Promoting Wellness

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), has since weighed in on the issue as well. They presented “Pinggang Pinoy” which is a food guide utilising a food plate model to show the recommended proportions by food group in every meal. This model was developed in collaboration with the DOH, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the National Nutrition Council (NNC).

    Balancing Entertainment and Public Health

The discussion surrounding the potential ban also highlights the evolving nature of internet trends and their impact on society. As online content continues to shape cultural norms and behaviours, it raises important questions about the balance between entertainment and public health. The mukbang trend, while entertaining for many, has underscored the need for greater awareness and responsibility in content creation and consumption.

    Conclusion: A Call for Reflection

In conclusion, the DOH’s consideration of a mukbang ban following a vlogger’s death has brought to light the significant health risks associated with the trend. The proposal has sparked a debate on censorship and personal responsibility. However, it ultimately underscores the importance of prioritising public health. As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how the government will navigate this complex issue. An issue such as this requires a balance between the protection of citizens with the principles of freedom of expression. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the consequences of internet trends, urging content creators and viewers to reflect on the impact of their actions.
