Stress Levels in Singapore Steadily Increasing: The Dangers Of Mental Health

A study by TODAY in 2023 showed that stress levels in Singapore have been steadily increasing since 2021. In 2023, 87 percent of respondents felt stressed, seven percentage points more than the global average.

Singaporeans are known for their strong work ethic and dedication. Workaholics are often praised for their commitment. However, this work culture can lead to varying levels of stress. This is not an issue to be taken lightly.

    The Importance of Mental Health

According to the World Health Organisation, mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. Without deliberate actions to have good mental health, stress-related issues may occur.

    High Blood Pressure

When stressed, the heart beats faster, and blood vessels narrow. This increases one’s blood pressure and can lead to adverse cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) events such as heart attacks or strokes.

    Obesity

When one experiences stress, the hormone cortisol is increased. This raises insulin levels, which lowers blood sugar and makes one crave sugary, fatty foods. These foods also trigger the release of dopamine and serotonin, hormones that have a calming effect. Thus, one is more likely to eat more of it, which increases the likelihood of obesity.

    Ulcers

Composed of damaged tissue in the gastrointestinal tract, stress ulcers are believed to be caused by physical stress. As acid levels in the stomach change, the stomach lining is damaged. This can cause pain, a burning sensation, and a higher risk of infection.

    Benefits of Mental Health

Prioritising mental health results in positive impacts to yourself and beyond. By taking care of ourselves, we can better develop personally, in the community, and in the socio-economic landscape.

    Decreased Stress Levels

Prioritising mental health promotes a healthy mind and improved quality of life. “Feel-good” hormones such as serotonin, which contribute to the feeling of happiness and relaxation, may be released.

    Increased Energy Levels

Stress brings down one’s serotonin and dopamine levels. These two hormones manage mood, tension, energy, and motivation. Thus, one’s energy levels will be increased due to a decrease in stress.

    Increased Productivity

The chances of being distracted while working will also be reduced. Consequently, we will be able to work more efficiently, with more focus, and produce higher-quality work.

    Conclusion

In an increasingly stressed society, the need to emphasise mental health is indisputable and urgent. Prioritising mental health will prevent repercussions and bring about positive impacts such as decreased stress levels, increased productivity, and increased energy levels.
